Citing Libyan sources, the Italian press said the pair work for a ground handling company at Ghat airport near the Algerian border.
"The ministry has been informed of the situation and has been following up on developments from the moment it leat of the case," a ministry spokesman told AFP.
"We are working with the maximum caution, bearing in mind how delicate the situation is."
Several Italian companies work in Libya, a former Italian colony, and their expat staff have often fallen prey to kidnappers in recent years.
In the most recent case, four Italians working for a construction company were kidnapped in July 2015 near an oil field operated by Italian giant ENI in the region of Mellitah

The quake of magnitude 4.1 struck at 1:34am on Tuesday in Rieti province, with the epicentre between the towns of Accumoli, Arquata del Tronto and Amatrice - the towns worst-hit by the disaster of 21st August.
Aftershocks of 2.1 and 3.2 magnitude were felt in the early hours of the moing, according to the INGV earthquake monitoring centre in Rome.
Emergency services say they received calls from conceed members of the public, but no injury or damage to property has been reported, according to Il Fatto Quotidiano.
Further tremors of up to magnitude 3.4 were felt later in the night in Perugia, 150 kilometres from Amatrice.

An Italian tourist was trampled to death by an elephant in a Kenyan national park while trying to get a good picture, police said.
"He was attacked not far from his tent while photographing it," a police officer who asked not to be named told AFP.The man, who was 66, "sustained serious injuries and died before he could be taken to hospital", he added.The accident occurred at Swara camp in the Tsavo National Park, near the Kenyan coast, and was confirmed by the city of Malindi's police chief Muchangi Mutawa, who did not provide more details.The police source said the tourist had moved from his tent close to the elephant to take a photograph of the jumbo, which was near the Sabaki River.

The Ilva steel plant in Taranto.The rate of cancer among children in Taranto, southe Italy - home to the Ilva steel plant - is 30 percent higher than the national average, the first report into cancer rates in the region shows.
The most alarming figures relate to the city of Taranto, where a high concentration of factories, including the Ilva site, has had a negative impact on the local air quality. Cancer of the lungs or bronchus was the most common variety.
As well as the elevated risk of tumours, children under 14 living close to the polluting Ilva plant are three times more likely than their peers to suffer from asthma or respiratory problems.
Airtum (the Italian Association of Cancer Registries) analysed data from between 2006 and 2011 to create the report, which was made public on Saturday.

The couple's entrance by helicopter - landing in the local churchyard - was the highlight of the celebrations in Nicotera, a town in the Vibo Valentia area of Calabria.
The couple, named as Antonio and Aurora Gallone, and their 400 wedding guests had the entire historic area to themselves, with the central square closed to the public for three hours.
However, police are conceed that the local branch of the mafia may have been involved; mayor Franco Pagano told local press that the helicopter's landing had had no official authorization, but the area was cordoned off with official barriers, suggesting the complicity of someone working for the municipal authorities.

As debate continued to rage over the tragic fate of Tiziana Cantone, privacy tsar Antonello Soro said a public prosecutor had erred when he ruled in October 2015 that the 31-year-old woman's case could not be considered as an illegal breach of her privacy.
The prosecutor did not act on Cantone's complaint on the grounds that she had voluntarily shared the video with friends and had not explicitly notified them not to post it online.

The dead man, found by hikers 25 years ago this week a snowball's throw from the Austrian-Italian border and put in a wooden coffin at a nearby police station, tued out to have died more than 5,000 years ago.
Mummified in the ice, "Oetzi", as he was later nicknamed, was a sensation, providing invaluable scientific insights that a quarter of a century later show no sign of abating.
"The iceman is without doubt one of the most outstanding mummy discoveries in the history of mankind," said Angelika Fleckinger, director of the museum in Bolzano, Italy, where the mummy is on display.

"We are determined in the UK to help Italy. We recognise this is a European problem," Johnson told a joint press conference with Italian counterpart Paolo Gentiloni in Florence.
Johnson noted that British vessels HMS Diamond and HMS Enterprise were participating in the Rome-based EU military taskforce dubbed Operation Sophia, launched in 2015 with the aim of neutralising refugee smuggling routes in the Mediterranean.
Johnson said Operation Sophia was designed "to help tu back some of these boats ... and I think personally they should be tued back as close to the shore as possible, so they don't reach the Italian mainland and they are more of a deterrent effect" to other vessels bent on heading for Italy from north Africa.

A collapsed building in Amatrice. Photo: Angela Giuffrida.Scammers have been cashing in on last month’s Italian earthquake by selling t-shirts and falsely claiming that the proceeds would be donated to helping people stricken by the disaster, which killed 291 people.
The Italian fraud squad discovered that a supposed non-profit association was selling t-shirts for €20 through an webshop for customized t-shirts, and promising to send the money to the local council in Amatrice. Amatrice was the town worst hit by the earthquake on August 24th.
Council employees told the police that they had not authorized the campaign. The non-profit organization does not exist, police say.
The t-shirts featured drawings of the nearby mountains and Amatrice’s famous bell tower, with its clock stopped at 3:36, the time of the earthquake, according to Il Tempo.
Police are investigating the case as fraud, but so far have not identified any suspects.

Tiziana Cantone struggled for her right to be forgotten.The suicide of a woman who battled for months to have a video of her having sex removed from the inteet is fuelling debate in Italy on the "right to be forgotten" online.
The 31-year-old, Tiziana Cantone, was found hanged at her aunt's home in Mugnano, close to Naples in the country's south on Tuesday.
Her death came a year after she sent a video of herself having sex to some friends, including her ex-boyfriend, to make him jealous.
The video and her name soon found their way to the web and went viral, fuelling mockery of the woman online. The footage has been viewed by almost a million inteet users.
In a bid to escape the humiliation, Tiziana quit her job, moved to Tuscany and tried to change her name, but her nightmare went on.
The words "You're filming? Bravo", spoken by the woman to her lover in the video, have become a derisive joke online, and the phrase has been printed on T-shirts, smartphone cases and other items.

Italian bank BMPS named a new chief executive and aounced the resignation of its chairman on Wednesday as part of a major management shake-up at the crisis-ridden lender.
Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena said that Marco Morelli, who heads Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Italy, had been named to replace former CEO Fabrizio Viola, who resigned last week, reportedly under pressure from the govement.
The chairman of the bank, Massimo Tononi, has also agreed to step down, the bank said, drawing a line under the previous management which oversaw a collapse in the bank's share price.
Fears for BMPS, which urgently needs new investment, increased in July when it was found to be Europe's weakest major bank in tests undertaken by the European Banking Authority.
The finances of Italy's third-biggest lender have raised conces for the Italian banking sector more broadly and pose a headache for centre-left Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who wants to avoid a state bailout.

The snowshoe was just a few thousand years older than thought. Photo: Roman Clara/Bolzano regional govementA snowshoe discovered over a decade ago in Italy’s Dolomite mountains and previously thought to belong to a nineteenth century cattle farmer is actually nearly six thousand years old, it has been revealed.
The shoe was found in 2003 in the melting snow of Gurgler Eisjoch glacier by Simone Bartolini, a cartographer for the Military Geographic Institute in Florence. Bartolini was mapping the Austrian-Italian border in South Tyrol, a German-speaking area of northe Italy.
Assuming the shoe to be about a hundred years old, Bartolini displayed the shoe in his office as a memento. He only realised that it was much older than previously thought after discussing it with an archaeologist colleague.
Radiocarbon dating by two separate labs now shows the shoe dates from 3800-3700 BC. This makes it up to 600 years older than the famous ice man Ötzi, who was found in 1991 just seven

"If by October 7 the city council has not guaranteed (its support) we caot go forward," Giovai Malago told a press conference. The date is a deadline for bidding cities to present fuller details of their bid proposals.
New mayor Raggi has made it clear she does not regard the Olympic bid a good idea for the cash-strapped city but has stopped short of saying she will not back it.
"There will be no cost involved for Roman citizens," he said, arguing that the €5.3-billion-euro budget for the Games would be fully covered by the Olympic Committee, sponsors and the national govement, which has enthusiastically backed the bid.

A Neapolitan photographer, Giovai Scotti is hoping someone will, and is selling his "unique" picture on eBay with a hefty price tag.
The eBay listing says his picture captures a rare moment from May 20th this year, when a rainbow framed the volcano, creating an "incredible and maybe unrepeatable" view.
While the rainbow was widely photographed, with snaps shared across social media, Scotti explains that many have claimed it was a stunt or Photoshop - and his negative is "the only incontrovertible proof of what really happened that day".

The party made the stuing gains in June in a stinging blow for Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and although M5S mayor for Rome, Virginia Raggi, has not publicly voiced her opposition, a blog by the party's founder Beppe Grillo on Sunday clearly said it was against the city bidding for the Games.
An editorial titled "The Games in Rome? No thank you!" said they would only serve to "condemn the future of youths to debt and act as a powerful arm of massive distraction".
The piece was written by Elio Lautti, a party lawmaker and the head of a consumers' association. Raggi, Rome's first female mayor, has repeatedly pledged her absolute loyalty to the party's founder.

Pietro the cat has been pulled from the rubble of the central Italy earthquake after surviving 16 days with no food, limited air and just rainwater to survive on.
"He's hurt, but alive. He's called Pietro," said Italian animal protection agency ENPA, which has assisted in caring for the lucky feline along with hundreds of other pets who were victims of the quake.
Firefighters were accompanying Pietro's owners to retrieve personal belongings from the house, when they heard some weak miaowing.
When the family realized their pet, whom they had given up for dead, was still alive under the ruins, they assisted in the rescue. A video of the moment can be seen below:
“Every life saved is an indescribable emotion. And luckily, miracles never end...” said ENPA, using the hashtag '#ForzaPietro' (go Pietro), It added that the cat's family were "astonished and emotional in equal measure".

The defendant, named as 69-year-old Pietro L., was initially found guilty of indecency after masturbating in front of female students outside the University of Catania in Sicily.
He was given a three-month jail sentence and ordered to pay a fine of of €3,420 in March 2015 - a verdict which was upheld by the local court of appeal.
However, the Court of Cassation in Rome, Italy's top court, saw things differently and acquitted the man this week, following a hearing in June.

Hard-working pizza chefs cooked up a record-breaking 5,836 pizzas in around 12 hours in the southe region of Puglia.
That's an impressive average of 550 pizzas an hour, or more than nine every minute.
The previous record of 5,070 - which had been set in Chiasso, Switzerland, in June 2015 by the Naples Academy of Pizza - was broken after ten hours and 23 minutes, and the Pugliese chefs went on to bake a further 766 delicious pies.
The record of pizza production was first established by employees of a Singaporean restaurant who made a total of 3,574, so the chefs will be pleased to bring the title back home.
It was a team effort of 43 pizza-makers, many from Italy's association of qualified pizza chefs, who gathered in Martina Franca, in Puglia, southe Italy. The record attempt was the finale of the town's three-day pizza-themed celebration at the weekend, which saw a total of 11,000 pizzas baked and eaten.

Javier Salinas Viñals was accused of having an affair with his secretary. Photo: Bishopric of MallorcaThe Bishop of Mallorca has been removed from his post by the Vatican after complaints that he had conducted an "improper relationship" with his married secretary.
Javier Salinas Viñals, 68. who was appointed as bishop to the Balearic islands in 2013, was reported to the Vatican by the ex-husband of his former secretary who claimed the prelate had been having a long-standing affair with his wife.
The scandal erupted last December when a dossier was presented to Vatican authorities containing a alleged evidence collected by a private detective.
The complaint alleged that the bishop had been conducting an affair with his secretary that had led to the break-up of her marriage.
It included photographs of the pair together as well as testimony from witnesses and phone bills that purported to show the Bishop had made lengthly late night calls to "his mistress".
